Notes:
Saint-Domingue was a French colony on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola from 1659 to 1804, when it became the independent nation of Haiti.[1]

Brest 03/81 = De GRASSE's main fleet departed from Brest March 1781. It would be augmented by other French vessels during deployment to "Antilles" and North American waters. It should be noted that the French expression "Antilles" included the entire Carribean or West Indies islands.

Capes combat refers to the Second Battle of the Virginia Capes in September 1781. This engagement consisted of maneuvering and action at sea outside of the Bay. Some ships of the French fleet remained in the Bay. Also BARRAS's small naval squadron from Newport entered the Bay during this period.

Combat 4/82 refers to the Battle of the Saintes. During this engagement some French ships were captured off Porto Rico 1782. Some of the French naval fleet was in convoy formation that transported the French invasion forces, and were separated from the combat action, thus spared damage of capture.

BARRAS 03/81. De GRASSE's force was augmented by this contingent.

VAUDREUILL took over command of French fleet in the "Antilles" and North America after the capture of DEGRASSE.

sol = ship of the line.

fr = frigate.

Hudson Bay raid conducted by part of VAUDREUILL's fleet.
